New Zealand’s flagship community.

This historic former airbase is the NZ Government’s demonstration project for sustainability and affordability. Based on a Sustainable Development Framework, it is one of the largest and best new community developments in Australasia.

Doug assembled and led Boffa Miskell’s multi-disciplinary team in creating the Sustainable Development Framework and interim Urban Design Masterplan for the 165 Ha site, which will be home to about 10,000 people.

The Sustainable Development Framework has since been refined and continues to guide all development.

Hobsonville has won multiple design awards, acted as an incubator for new housing forms and become an inspiration and prototype for many subsequent Housing New Zealand (Kainga Ora) projects.

This project has won multiple awards over the past decade for its overall urban design, individual developments, buildings and parks, architecture, and landscape architecture. Recent examples include:

  • Winner, Auckland Architecture Awards 2019

  • NZ Property Council Ryder Hunt Award of Merit 2019

  • NZILA Silver Award – Hobsonville Design Code / Guidelines 2019

  • Gold – BEST Design Awards (Designers Institute of NZ) 2019

The whole development is really well done. Lots of areas in Auckland lack planning. Hobsonville Point is really well planned. We like the diversity in the community. I want to bring up my kids in a community which is representative of the city and the world they live in.
